Maple Sugar camp season Begins
As the temperatures and the sun begin to rise on the horizon, thoughts turn to a traditional rite of spring; Maple Sugar Season. Somerset County is the number one maple production county in the United States. Jackman, located in the middle of the county is no exception to this sappy tradition. The methods have changed over the years. Buckets poured into horse drawn sleighs onto a wood fired boiler located in a shack full of steam have been replaced by miles of plastic lines leading to reverse osmosis evaporators and a room full of stainless steel that resembles a surgical ward. Although the methods have changed, the sweet result remains. To our north, this is a time to party! Huge sugar camps serve up all types of foods and concoctions from this sweet nectar, while traditional French music and dance fills the room. Reservations are suggested at most of these camps and times of operation depend on Mother Nature. A list of sugar shacks and descriptions are in the common area and at the front desk. French is definitely a plus.
